Privacy Policy

This privacy notice discloses the privacy practices for Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, Inc. (“BWL”) and our website www.blackwomenlawyersla.org. This privacy notice applies solely to information collected by this website, except where otherwise stated. It will notify you of the following: (1) what information we collect; (2) with whom information is shared; (3) how information can be corrected; (4) how information is secured; (5) how policy changes will be communicated; and (6) how to address concerns over misuse of personal data.

Information Collection, Use, and Sharing
BWL is the sole owner of the information collected on this website. BWL only has access to/collect information that you voluntarily give us via email or other direct contact from you. BWL will not sell or rent your information to anyone. BWL will use your information for membership purposes, or in order to respond to any inquiries you make to the organization. BWL will not share your information with any third party outside of our organization, other than as necessary to fulfill your request, e.g., to ship an order. Unless you ask us not to, BWL may contact you via email to inform you about upcoming events, or changes to this privacy policy.

Your Access to and Control Over Information
You may opt out of any future contacts from BWL at any time. You may contact BWL at any time using the contact information provided on our website to: (1) see what data we have about you, if any; (2) change/correct any data we have about you; (3) have us delete any data we have about you; and (4) express any concern you have about our use of your data.

Membership/Orders
BWL may request information from you when you purchase a membership or other orders. When you purchase a membership or other order from BWL, you must provide contact information (e.g. name, address, phone number, email address) and financial information (e.g. credit card number, bank account information). This personal information will be used for membership and/or billing purposes, and to fulfill your orders. If BWL experiences complications processing an order, we will use your information to contact you.

Sharing
BWL may share aggregated demographic information with our partners and advertisers. Such demographic information will not include any personal information that can identify any individual person.

BWL may use a third party company to provide specific services (e.g. ship orders, process credit cards). BWL may share the contact information necessary for the third party to provide these services. Third parties are not allowed to retain, share, store, or use personally identifiable information for any purposes beyond providing the specific service requested.

Security
BWL takes precautions to protect your information. When you submit personal information via the website, your information is protected both online and offline. Any personal information BWL collects is encrypted and transmitted to us in a secure way. You may verify this by looking for a closed lock icon at the bottom of your web browser, or looking for “https” at the beginning of the website address. While BWL uses encryption to protect personal information transmitted online, we also protect your information offline. Only officers and employees who need the information to perform a specific task (e.g. billing or responding to inquiries) are granted access to personal information. The computers/servers on which we store personal information are kept in a secure environment.

Cookies
BWL may use “cookies” on our website. A cookie is a piece of data stored on a website visitor’s hard drive to help us improve your access to our site and identify repeat visitors to the website. For instance, when BWL uses a cookie to identify you, you would not have to log in more than once, thereby saving time while visiting our website. Cookies can also enable us to track and target the interests of our users to enhance their experience on our website. Usage of a cookie is in no way linked to any personal information on our website.

BWL’s website may contain links to other websites. Please be aware that we are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of such other websites. We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our website to read the privacy statements of any other website that collects personal information.

Notification of Changes
Whenever material changes are made to the privacy policy, there will be a notice on BWL’s website notifying users of such changes. You acknowledge that your continued use of BWL’s website after we publish a notice about changes to our privacy policy means that the collection and use of your personal information is subject to the updated privacy policy.

Legal Disclosures
It is possible that BWL will need to disclose information about you when required by law, subpoena, or other legal process or if we have a good faith belief that disclosure is reasonably necessary to (1) investigate, prevent, or take action regarding suspected or actual illegal activities or to assist government enforcement agencies; (2) investigate and defend ourselves against any third-party claims or allegations, (3) protect the security or integrity of our organization; or (4) exercise or protect the rights and safety of BWL, our officers, members, personnel, or others. We attempt to notify users about legal demands for their personal data when appropriate in our judgment, unless prohibited by law or court order or when the request is an emergency. We may dispute such demands when we believe, in our discretion, that the requests are overbroad, vague or lack proper authority, but we do not promise to challenge every demand.

California Online Privacy Protection Act Notice
On September 27, 2013, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law A.B. 370, amending the California Online Privacy Protection Act (CalOPPA) to require website operators like BWL to disclose how BWL responds to Do Not Track (“DNT”) signals; and whether third parties collect personal information about users when they visit BWL’s website. Currently, various browsers (including Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari) offer a DNT option that relies on a technology known as a DNT header that sends a signal to websites visited by the browser user about the user’s DNT preference. You can usually access your browser’s DNT option in your browser’s preferences. BWL does not respond to DNT signals. BWL does not authorize the identification of users of BWL’s website through advertising technologies that may appear through ads on the website.

If you have concerns about whether BWL is abiding by this privacy policy, please contact us immediately at president@blackwomenlawyersla.org.
