BWL Annual Retreat

On July 21-23, 2023, BWL witnessed the power of unity as over 50 attorneys, judges and law students met at the beautiful La Quinta Resort & Club in La Quinta, CA for its sold-out Annual Summer Retreat and Meeting. The weekend was filled with fellowship, relaxation and strategic planning for the upcoming 2023-2024 Board Year under the leadership of Ronni Whitehead Otieno. BWL Foundation Scholarship Fundraiser & Awards Luncheon 2023

On June 3, 2023, BWL’s charitable arm, Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles Foundation held its 47th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser & Awards Luncheon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel Garden. The theme was “Rooted in the Community: Empowering the Collective” where exceptional law students were awarded scholarships and attorneys Crystal Crawford and Amber Finch, Tabitha Brown, and the Social Justice Learning Institute received awards for excellence in advocacy, law, arts and community service. A special “thank you” to BWL Scholarship Luncheon Chair, Crystal Hayes Fields, and BWL Scholarship Selection Co-Chairs, Britany M. Engelman-Hicks and Kathiana Aurelian, for your outstanding work.

CABL Affiliate of the Year

On April 21, 2023, BWL was honored with an Affiliate of the Year Award from the California Association of Black Lawyers (CABL) in recognition of outstanding and dedicated service to the community and CABL. The award was presented by CABL President Shumika T.R. Sookdeo to BWL President Jasmine S. Horton during the President’s Reception at CABL’s Annual Convention in downtown Los Angeles. The honor was shared with BWL Past Presidents, Board Members, General Members and Sponsors.

The Road to Esquire

On April 19, 2023, BWL’s Education Committee (co-chaired by Sarah Clinton and Brenda Robinson) and John M. Langston Bar Association co-sponsored an event at USC Law School called The Road to Esquire, a 3-part series to prepare law student students for passing the July 2023 California Bar Exam presented by DeAndre Aubry of Legally Fit.

Toiletry Drive

On March 2, 2023, Community Action Chair Latrice Hemphill delivered 132 toiletry kits to the Downtown Women’s Shelter. BWL excitingly exceeded its goal of collecting toiletries during its toiletry drive.

On February 22, 2023, BWL’s Young Lawyers Committee (YLC) hosted a fun-filled Law + Bowl Mixer at Bowlero Los Angeles. The event was well-attended by both young lawyers and BWL Board members as they socialized and networked over food, drinks, bowling and arcade games.
