On November 22, 2023 Black Women Lawyers of Los Angeles, Inc. held our annual Cocktail Sip at the Sunset Room in the heart of the Hollywood Strip. A tribute to Studio 48 (celebrating 48 years of BWLA) this year’s theme was Disco Glam and we had a glamorous time! The Cocktail Sip is not only a celebration of our success but more importantly, this spectacular event is our primary fundraiser for our ongoing charitable and educational mission. Because of your support, BWL will continue its tradition of community service and leadership. Thank you to all of our attendees and sponsors.

On September 30th, the Black Women Lawyers, Inc. hosted our 48th Annual Installation and Awards Dinner at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles. The event was a momentous occasion, bringing together legal professionals, esteemed community leaders, and supporters to celebrate the accomplishments of the outgoing board and welcome the incoming board. Under the inspiring leadership of President Ronni Whitehead Otieno, the theme for this year is “From Vision to Reality: Dream Big, Push Boundaries, and Make History.”

On June 3, 2023, BWL’s charitable arm, Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles Foundation held its 47th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser & Awards Luncheon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel Garden. The theme was “Rooted in the Community: Empowering the Collective” where exceptional law students were awarded scholarships and attorneys Crystal Crawford and Amber Finch, Tabitha Brown, and the Social Justice Learning Institute received awards for excellence in advocacy, law, arts and community service. A special “thank you” to BWL Scholarship Luncheon Chair, Crystal Hayes Fields, and BWL Scholarship Selection Co-Chairs, Britany M. Engelman-Hicks and Kathiana Aurelian, for your outstanding work.

This year our Annual Thanksgiving Eve Cocktail Sip Fundraiser returned to Cicada Restaurant & Lounge in Downtown LA on November 23, 2022.

The theme was “Harlem Nights” and many attendees came dressed to impress. The Moody Brothers and DJ R-Tistic provided non-stop music while Sahara Nights created a fun, casino gaming experience. Co-chairs Heather Horn and Holly Parker along with their Sip committee worked tirelessly to make the evening memorable and fun while raising funds to support the 2022-23 BWL Board agenda.

The 2022 BWL Installation was an elegant celebration of BWL’s legacy and another successful bar year. The event took place at the California Club in downtown Los Angeles and the room was vibrant and full of energy. Thank you to our outstanding honorees Shawn White, General Counsel of Smith Family Circle, Professor Michele Goodwin, and George Fatheree, III and the Bruce’s Beach Legal Team. Congratulations to President Jasmine S. Horton and the 2022-2023 Board of Officers and Committee Chairs.

The Black Women Lawyers 46th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser and Awards Ceremony, took place June 4th, 2022 at the Beverly Hilton. The theme was Amplifying Black Voices. Honorees included Prentice Penny, Executive Producer and Showrunner of Insecure; Karen Grant- Selma, SVP, Business and Legal Affairs, The Oprah Winfrey Network; and California Black Women’s Health Project. Four scholarships were given this year to law school students. Recipients attended the event. The fundraiser was a success as the monetary goal was exceeded.

On Saturday, September 12, 2020, the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles installed Michelle L. Kazadi as its President for the 2020-2021 board year. The Installation & Awards Ceremony was held as a Virtual Event for the first time ever, and was an inspiring evening for all who viewed it.
